It sounds incredible, doesn’t it? After all the effort
AdSense publishers have put into blending ad units and
making them look like anything but ads, the idea that
in-your-face advertising could still make an
impression sounds bizarre.
And yet Google seems to think so.
That’s why I started playing around with Content
Referral, their own version of a CPA ad network.
If you haven’t heard of it, don’t beat yourself up.
While it’s not exactly top secret, they’re not really
shouting about it from the rooftops either. If you
didn’t get an invitation to join the beta, then
there’s a good chance you would have missed it.
The principle is simple: instead of being paid per
click in the way that AdSense usually pays, publishers
will be paid per action. They’ll also be able to tell
their users that they recommend the products in the
ads and they can choose the ads themselves.
If it sounds like a step back to the days of ad
networks then it’s worth pointing out that CPA/CPC ad
networks never went away. While contextual ads have
been busy sweeping the Web, those old banners, pop-ups
and pop-unders just got better. They got more
interactive and they got less intrusive.
And they still work. In fact I use some on a few
select pages on a few select sites.
I would never recommend that anyone try to monetize
their website solely with CPA/CPC ads from a network
but I do believe that when used properly, they can be
a very useful way to practice arbitrage or bring in
some sales commissions.
So what does the fact that Google seems to agree say
about the future of Internet advertising?
I’d be very surprised if Content Referral were to
replace AdSense. I think that’s very unlikely. From
what I’ve managed to find out about it, Google seems
to be more interested in ensuring advertisers get
value for money, by paying for truly valuable users,
than creating a network of aggressive ads. They
certainly haven’t gone down the route of
shoot-the-duck ads and strobe light banners.
I think it’s more likely that as the results of the
beta come in, we could see some changes to Smart
Pricing… but we’ll be left in peace to feast on our
blended ad units with an occasional CPA/CPC ad
topping.
